Happy Healthy Pets
Hello to all pet owners/lovers. . .We just wanted to give all of you some great tips to keep your pet healthy and happy during these winter months.  .  .

Did you know. . .

your pet can get the "winter blues" like we do.  "Cabin Fever" is not just a human emotion but also an emotion our pets go through.  If your pet is laying around looking "depressed", take them for a ride; even if it is around the block.  Getting out with a change of scenery does greatly help their "blues".  Actually, this is something we do with our own pets all year round.  Another thing is, get yourself bundled up as if you are going to shovel the snow or sled ride, etc., and take your pet out and play as if it is summer.  Even the pets who do not like to be out long will appreciate the exercise and play.  If your pet shivers cold, put a sweater on them and make this a short exercise.

. . .keeping your pet clean during the winter:  when anyone brings their pet to me to be groomed, I always end the bath with an oatmeal based shampoo, they, like us, get dried out from the heat in the house and the temperature changes of going outside and back in.  But at home, even brushing them once a week will help stimulate their coat and skin.  Bathing should be done periodically all through the year so they get used to the fact this something they have to do and you will see their coat, emotions, etc. improve greatly.

. . .fleas and parasites:  Even though fleas die during the cold. . .this only helps with new infestation.  You should keep a flea treatment all year round (such as Frontline, etc.)  This keeps the eggs, larvae and fleas no chance of appearing once the spring weather comes.  Often, a different, less expensive one is good during the cold months and then the better ones are great from March through Novemer or December.  Flea eggs that are in your home on the furniture, carpets, etc. are still in a warm climate; your home and can re-infest your pet even in freezing conditions.

. . .pet paws:  It is very important to first of all have your pet's nails cut often during the winter, since they are not outside digging, running, etc as often to wear them down.  This is especially for cats, since they aren't climbing trees, etc.  Too long of nails is painful for your pet, so monthly cutting is recommended.  The other thing to do for your pet is to keep the fur trimmed down around their paw pads.  Long fur there keeps their paws cold and wet when they come in from outside.  You may also try to keep a towel nearby the outside door they use and wipe them off to keep them warm.

. . .pets and colds:  Our pets can contract colds as we can.  We cannot catch an illness from them, but they surely can catch it from us.  Keep the same kind of resistance for you pet as you would for yourself.  Never give them a cold remedy used by us without the consent or recommendation of your vet.

Take a "paws" out of your busy schedule and pay some extra attention to your pet. . .they are more loyal than any of us ever would be an deserve to be catered to as they cater to us.  Even if you are sitting on the couch with a blanket, invite them up and under the covers with you. . .they will love the attention.

Remember. . .they are completely dependant on us, so make sure they have plenty of clean water to drink as they too can dehydrate in the winter, spend some quality time with them and check on them as you would a small child for signs of any type of infestations, colds, and needs as they cannot tell us what they are feeling.

Love your pet today, tomorrow and every day.

Also, please take some time out to check with your local shelter to see if you can donate anything including your time. . .even an hour a month would help those wonderful people who tend to the abandoned, surrendered and abused animals.

We, at Flick N' Fluff are doing donation drives all year in 2010 to donate to local shelters.  We will accept any item (toys, crates, food, etc) as well as monetary donations to send to various shelters that really need help or if an animal has had to have extensive vet care due to neglect or abuse, we will donate this money for them.  We are matching dollar for dollar for anyone who donates.  Go to our inquiry page and someone will get back to you to how and where you can give these poor abandoned animals a donation.  And remember, if you adding a pet to your household, go to a shelter first. . .these precious animals need your love.
